Setting boundaries and being accessible
Making yourself accessible to your clients all day, every day, is not a great way to grow your business.
Instead, it's an excellent way to get overwhelmed and burned out!
And that’s how a friend of mine told me she was feeling. So I shared with her what I’m going to share with you.
1. Be pedantic with your diary.
It sets boundaries, helps manage your teams’ and clients’ expectations, and minimises confusion.
For example, in the mornings, the only calls I schedule are with my team, so they can ask anything that might help them get on with their day.
Every other morning slot is already blocked out as ‘work’. Then, each Friday, I look at what I need to do the following week and schedule that into those morning slots.
I know I work best in the mornings, and once they’re ‘in’, they become as important as a client meeting. I would never let a client down, so why would I let myself down?
2 Take a lunch break!
I schedule my lunch break and time to walk the dogs each day because it gives me a finishing time for the morning workload. It sets a healthy boundary, too, because if you don't, you might continue, and the morning can too easily blend into the afternoon.
And the dogs expect it, so they keep me to it!
3. Make the most of the afternoon slump hour!
After lunch, I often feel sluggish… most of us do. In my opinion, that’s the ideal time to tackle emails.
So, I look at and then prioritise my emails. I reply to things that need to be answered immediately and schedule the others.
4. Schedule your day to suit how you work best
Because I tackle my ‘tasks’ in the morning, it frees up my brain and my time to support clients in the afternoons. So, that’s when I schedule client calls, meetings, and project work.
5. Manage your accessibility!
Only my VIP clients have my WhatsApp number, but I rarely get calls on it. They can message me and know I’ll reply as soon as possible … but on my terms. This creates a better working relationship, as there’s no expectation or confusion.
By managing my diary in a way that suits me, I’ve set boundaries that motivate me and keep me on track, and my clients know when they can reach me. I’m still accessible, but it's on my terms.
